Past Project Chronology

The following listing is a chronological highlight of some of the projects the firm has completed since 1993:

In this list, “Metro” refers to the tri-county regional government in the Portland, Oregon area. It is this government entity that is responsible for the region’s solid waste planning.

  • City of Eugene, Oregon Can Weight Study -  2003 - 2004: Designed and implemented a field study to weigh garbage, recycling, and yard debris at a sampling of residential customers throughout the city. Compiled data and analyzed results for rate study and program evaluation.

  • Yakima County and Clallam County Solid Waste Characterization Studies -  2002 - 2003: Assisted primary consultant in sampling residential and commercial waste streams; surveyed customers at drop boxes, landfills, and transfer stations to quantify opinions and actions in waste disposal habits; interviewed multiple generators for site-specific generation quantities for commercial waste diversion and disposal numbers.

  • Study of Processors of Commingled Commercial Recyclables -  2002: Qualified and quantified the processed commodities and residue from eight different processors in the Metro region.

  • Western Electronic Product Stewardship Initiative -  2001 – 2002: Coordinated efforts in a multi-stakeholder environment to discuss product stewardship opportunities in the electronic industry. EP’s activities focus on the opportunities to reuse computers and the barriers to recycling materials from this set of products.

  • Recycling Storage Evaluation for Metro – 2001 -  Investigated and documented the status of the Model Zoning Ordinance developed by Metro  to address on-site storage of mixed solid waste and recyclables. Documented construction and placement criteria of solid waste and recyclables enclosures  for over 50 unique sites throughout the tri-county region.

  • Product Stewardship Research for Oregon’s DEQ – 2000 - 2001 – Researched sources and end-of-life issues for mercury and mercury-containing products, carpet, and computers and televisions. Researched quantities, major sources, and disposal and recycling systems for each of these three categories of materials.

  • Material Handling Procedures Evaluation for Multnomah County Library – 2000 - Obtained and analyzed data to determine type and quantity of materials being transported daily between branches. Determined transportation costs, calculated current system capacity, and evaluated handling procedures both at branches and on trucks. Offered alternative routines to increase system efficiency.

  • Residential Commingled Recycling Study for City of Portland, Washington County and Clackamas County – 1998 - 1999 - monitored and evaluated four unique commingled sorts for residential curbside collection. Highlighted effects of commingling on glass and newspaper.

  • Construction and Demolition Solid Waste Generator Survey for Metro and City of Portland - 1998 - Researched the waste handling procedures practiced by the commercial, new residential, and remodeling factions of the construction industry. Defined policy potential and outreach program possibilities to better manage this commercial waste generator category.

  • Residential Waste Consultation Services for City of Eugene - 1997 - Designed a program of waste reduction presentations for residents of Eugene, Oregon.  Created associated workbook and trained volunteers to present waste prevention instructions and perform waste audits for up to 500 households.

  • Commercial Waste Prevention Case Studies for Metro – 1996 - 1997 - Researched and created case studies highlighting the waste prevention tactics of five companies in the Portland Metro region, implementing a waste prevention plan for one of the five participants.

  • Commercial Waste Generator Study for Metro – as subcontractor to Harding Lawson Associates, 1996 - 1997 - Surveyed and interviewed nearly 200 companies in the metropolitan region of Portland to participate in a waste generation study. Performed data collection and observations for recycling measurement and waste management. Scheduled, performed and coordinated data collection for the waste sorts of participating companies.

  • Food Donation Study for Metro - 1995- Compiled list of non-profit organizations in metro region that accept food donations. Conducted over 100 phone interviews to obtain names, addresses and specific needs of organizations to be published for distribution to area grocers and restaurateurs.
